BIG0016 Dave Easley - Byways of the Moon

Dave Easley plays the pedal steel guitar, but this is not a “pedal steel guitar” album; it’s an album by a gifted musician at the peak of his career. His phrasing, sense of touch, harmonic sensibilities and sheer virtuosity put him in a league with the greatest musicians of our time. There is plenty to love in this album – the lyricism displayed on “My Foolish Heart,” and “Ruby My Dear”, a version of “In a Silent Way” that Biran Wilson would love and an interpretation of “In My Room” that I think Miles Davis would have approved of and of course John Coltrane’s formidable composition “Giant Steps”. The deft and tasteful ensemble-like accompaniment of drummer Chad Taylor and double bassist Dave Tranchina; Cathlene Pineda’s rhapsodic piano solo on “Jesus Maria” and more.

BIG0015 Maria Elena Silva - Eros

Eros is a delicate art-pop record with an improvisational-jazz undercurrent. Maria Elena Silva drove across the country from Wichita with drummer and collaborator, Scott Dean Taylor to record this album in three ethereal days. The ensemble and arrangements are nothing short of striking: Alex Sadnik and Brian Walsh’s woodwinds in magical counterpoint, Jeff Parker (tortoise) and Schlarb’s guitar parts perfectly complimenting Silva’s, Philip Glenn’s organ entrances psychically setting up a new section, Anthony Shadduck’s contrabass grounding us when the band’s at its most impressionistic, flawlessly placed percussion textures by Danny Frankel. Written in the wake of a divorce, these are stories of isolation and wasted love, near death experiences, spiritual burnings and echings

BIG0014 Chris Schlarb & Chad Taylor - Time No Changes

No Changes is like a warm improvisational conversation between two friends, with Chris Schlarb and Chad Taylor. A special co-release with Austin label Astral Spirits, Time No Changes was recorded at BIG EGO in a single day with Schlarb on 6- and 12-string acoustic guitars and Taylor on drums and mbira. Jaime Zu contributes a stunning cover illustration and Tyler Wilcox writes the liner notes.

BIG0012 Klyfta - Cosmic Pilgrimage: The Klyfta Tapes (1972-1975)

Although presented under the band name Klyfta, the album Cosmic Pilgrimage is about as close as we'll get to a Psychic Temple prog-rock/fusion release. Recorded for the Jay Tholen video game Hypnospace Outlaw, the music of Klyfta somehow found a cult audience and we just had to remix and remaster these songs for a vinyl release.

BIG0011 MSSV - Main Steam Stop Valve

Main Steam Stop Valve follows the Live Flowers album recorded by guitarist mike Baggetta, bassist, Mike Watt and drummer Stephen Hodges. Live Flowers was recorded while touring in support fo Baggetta’s Wall of Flowers. On this tour, Baggetta, Watt and Hodges played crazy sets based in a soupçon of Wall of Flowers material, but referencing tons of things – from Watt’s stint with the Stooges, to Hodges’ work with David Lynch – all tied together with Baggetta’s fantastic guitar chops. Main Steam Stop Valve was recorded at Big Ego following a California mini tour, resulting in a monster of post-form fusion.

BIG0010 David Lord - Forest Standards Vol. 2

David Lord’s Forest Standards Vol. 2 is the quietly riveting follow-up to 2018’s Forest Standards Vol 1. With Chicago post-rock and avant-jazz stalwarts Jef fParker (guitar) and Chad Taylor (drums), plus bassist Billy Mohler and vibraphonist Sam Hake, Lord engages in mellow exchanges of slanted and enchanted ideas.

BIG0008 David Tranchina Large-ish Ensemble - The Ogre

Bassist/composer, David Tranchina wrote the songs for Ogre, during a time when he had broken his wrist and couldn’t play bass. He was on a lot of painkillers and wanted to try his hand at writing for a larger ensemble after playing in bigger bands. Tranchina’s compositions are evocative and memorable, filled to the brim with textures, emotion and surprise.

BIG0007 Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon - Namesake

As Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon’ was competing through the final acts of American Idol in 2019, he was secretly recording his first full length album with Chris Schlarb at Big Ego. Chris had seen an immense talent in Jeremiah in 2016 when he had recorded a promising EP in Lynchburg, Virginia in 2016. Faced with the decision to follow this organic album of songs with Schlarb and a “five figure” major label deal, where he would be put through “the star-maker machine” , he chose to finish Namesake. The first three sessions yielded 9 nine songs including “Almost Heaven” featuring a rhythm section of Cherry Glazerr drummer Tabor Allen and L.A. bass virtuoso Steuart Liebig. Eventually the scope of the album would grow to include an orchestra, a gospel choir, inconoclastic guitarist Jeff Parker, and Stephen Hodges, drummer on the Tom Waits classic Swordfishtrombones. This album is a moment.

BIG0006 Guma - Guma

Guma is the first solo endeavor for T.J. Masters after performing and touring in NYC’s acclaimed Conveyor. To record Guma, Masters traveled from Austin, Texas to record his music at Big Ego with some of the finest musicians in Los Angeles including Tabor Allen and Ana Barreiro on drums, Anna Butterss and Steuart Liebig on bass, and Tony Rinaldi on keys. The album has a coy groove - like a Robert Frost character waxing to their unknown lover – cool, fresh and newly budded.

BIG0005 Mike Baggetta / Jim Keltner / Mike Watt - Wall of Flowers

Jazz guitarist and sharp improviser, Mike Baggetta, chose to pursue a desire to work with a rhythm section that had “the deepest, snakiest, most off-kilter grooves I could imagine and to lean heavily towards improvising throughout the session.” For most of the album, he’s joined by the unlikely dream team of bassist Mike Watt and drummer Jim Keltner, the wildly prolific session ace well-known for his work with Ry Cooder, John Hiatt and Bob Dylan, amongst countless others – both musicians he’d long admired but had never met.

BIG0004 Anthony Shadduck - Quartet & Double Quartet

Quartet and Double Quartet is an inspired recording by Southern California bassist, Anthony Shadduck. Side one features a collection of songs performed by a pliant and almost pristine quartet playing songs by Ornette coleman, Paul Motian, Chris Schlarb and Shadduck himself, while side two finds Anthony leading a loose, rocking and roiling double quartet performing more obliquely structured pieces and employing a healthy dose of spontaneous improvisation.

Forest Standards Vol. 1 is a delightfully weird and wonderful album freed from convention. It is the first recording under David Lord’s own name after 15 releases under the name Francis Moss and with indie-rock bands The Wonder Revolution, Miki Moondrops and Solagget. Lord is accompanied by the remarkably empathetic, open ended rhythm tandem of acclaimed drummer, Chad Taylor (Jeff Parker Trio, Marc Ribot, Chicago Underground) and bassist Devin Hoff (Nels Cline Singlers, Bend Goldberg Quintet, julia Holtner).
